Why doesn't my hair grow longer?

I have curly hair. I cut myself "bangs" (completely to my scalp) when I was 4 and even 9 years later that hair is only 8 inches long. hair is supposed to grow 1/2 in. per month. My friend cut her hair to her shoulders a year ago and now it is past her chest. Mine is at the bottom of my rib cage when it is straight, but it should be longer WHY ME!!!

Here are some other hair growing tips:

1)Eliminate or cut back on smoking, caffeine and carbonated sodas which weaken the body and block maximum hair growing potential.

2)Eat a healthy diet. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or fat.

3)Treat your hair like a piece of fine old lace. Treat it carefully avoiding any unnecessary brushing, combing or handling.

4)Avoid use of hot water, hot blow dryers or other hair care tools that may stress the hair.

5)Have a weekly scalp massage to provide stimulation to the hair follicles.

6)Do a series of ongoing hot oil treatments to protect the hair's shaft.

7)Have regular trims to eliminate split ends and allow the hair to look and feel healthier.

8)Get plenty of rest and sleep to allow your body to grow hair.

Why doesn't my hair grow longer?

Sometimes curly hair can be very brittle. If you don't seem to be growing longer, chances are it is breaking off before any length can be added. Maintainence for curly hair is very important. The protective oils that one has naturally work their way down to the tips of hair very easily on straight haired people, but not so easily on curly/wavy hair. The curlier the hair, the more difficult for those oils to work their way down and protect the hair. Plus, all the heat tools people use now days, and with shampooing so often, those oils don't get a chance to do much good for many people. That is why good products are essential. Curly hair needs moisture. You need to use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, as well as a moisture TREATMENT. But if your hair is breaking, then you also need a good protein reconstructor type product. Paul Mitchell makes some good ones for both situations. There are also reconstructors that have a good balance of both moisture and protein which is probably what you need. See a stylist to select some good professional products for your hair type, so you can see some results.

Genes also enter in. Some people have great hair genes! Some don't. If you do what you can do to take care of it so it can be the best hair it can, then the rest is up to what you got from mother nature! Some people just can't grow long hair. But if you use good professional products and do what you can, you'll be able to get your hair to it's full potential (with a little bit of patience and time!) I'm guessing that because your hair is curly, that you don't brush it, but just in case you do brush when it's wet, you MUST STOP! That in itself causes so much breakage and splits! Gently comb with a large tooth comb especially when wet!

Make sure you're getting plenty of protein in your diet, as well as essential fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, amino acids, and biotin just to name a few.

I'm also guessing your age, by the info you gave, to be about 13 years old. Chances are you're hair is not fully matured yet. There are some discrepencies as to exactly what that age is, (some say 12 some say up to 16) Your body is also concentrating on doing all it's hormonal changes and not too worried about producing hair! (hope that makes sense!) Hang in there and do what you can to take proper care of your hair, and you'll see results! Healthy, shiny hair no matter what length is a great goal!

You can do several things to help hair growth. The best is to take some vitamin E or increase vitamin E in your diet. Also scalp massage, getting regular trims, and some people swear by using horse shampoo and conditioner (gives you silky and shiney hair).
