ok this depends on several factors

1. What YOU like (yes YOU, not anyone else)

2. How smooth your complexion is.

3. What shape face you have.

4. What color your hair is and if it suits your skintone.

5. Does your hair look neat and look like it has a style?

6. How much time you have to do your hair? (lifestyle)

7. What condition your hair is in. (If long hair is in BAD shape, it will look BAD)

there's more, but to get a better result seek a stylist that is willing to listen to you. I have a poetic rule:" If they don't want to talk hair, get outta their chair."

Well after 40 or anytime really, its personal choice. Some boyfriends or husbands require their lady friends/wives, to keep length because thats what they want....sometimes it may not be what the woman wants, but they keep it long as a personal thing for their spouse. or significant other. Also it could be a religious decision too! After being a licensed hairdresser for over 26 years, I can tell you this..... 'I've seen it all, I've heard all their excuses, for wanting long hair, and it boils down to two things;

1) The man in their life

2) A religious commitment

My hair is almost 1/2 way down my back, I am over 50, and I don't color it anymore, why? because of my husband. He'd flip out if I cut it off. And believe me I'd much rather have it short...... lol lol lol

I don't think men should concern themselves with that sort of thing but, some of them do anyway.

A lot of older women choose to cut their hair because it's easier to take care of and there's less of it to color.
